Billings MLS provides new member orientation that includes Fair Housing, Anti-Trust, MLS Rules and Regulations and Code of Ethics training required by the National Association of REALTORS®. Our staff is committed to providing the best possible service to our members while keeping you up to date on the latest industry news and real estate related activities.
What are the requirements for primary membership in the MLS and IDX?
The Billings MLS follows the NARs guidelines for MLS membership:
- Participants must be REALTORS® who are a principal, partner, corporate officer, or branch office manager acting on behalf of a principal.
- Participants must hold a current, valid real estate broker’s license.
- Participants must offer or accept compensation to and from other participants (or be licensed or certified by a state regulatory agency to engage in the appraisal of real property).
- Participants (other than appraisers) must actively—continually and on an ongoing basis—endeavor to: a. list real property of the type listed on the MLS in which participation is sought and/or, b. accept offers of cooperation and compensation made by listing brokers in the MLS.

The Office of Management and Budget defines Billings as the principal city of Billings Metropolitan Statistical Area. Billings is the largest and fastest growing metro area in Montana and has a population of over 180,000 residents. The highest point in Montana is Granite Peak at 12,799 feet, and the state’s lowest point is the Kootenai River at 1,800 feet.
The natural beauty of Billings, Red Lodge, Roundup and surrounding areas attracts nature-lovers from all over the country. Originating as a railroad town, Billings has grown into a major retail and trade and distribution center for a majority of the state. Although Billings has plenty of large offices and headquarters in the area, it was named one of the best small cities to start a small business in. The Montana city hosts a variety of conventions, concerts, and sporting events and is a landing point for several natural wonders. Some of the area’s natural attractions include Red Lodge Mountain Resort, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, and Chief Plenty Coups State Park. Beartooth highway connects Red Lodge directly to Yellowstone National Park, making the area a popular pass-through destination for travelers as well.
Billings humid continental climate makes for dry, hot summers and cold winters. During the summer, the city’s temperature can rise to 88°F, and it can fall to 16°F over the winter season. Billings receives an average of 14 inches of rainfall and 46 inches of snow per year.
