Knoxville Area Association of Realtors (KAAR), now known as East Tennessee Realtors, was founded in 1912 and is located in Knoxville, Tennessee. This organization aims to unite and provide services to its members to improve their skills and ability to successfully conduct business ethically and professionally while preserving and promoting the right to own and transfer real estate property. Today, the company has continued to grow with 4,500 members and about 4,000 active listings across the state of Tennessee. KAARMLS has a community involvement page that shares the latest volunteer projects. KAAR MLS also has a benevolent fund to provide assistance to KAAR members and their families that demonstrate severe financial hardships due to illness, catastrophic events and accidents.

East Tennessee Realtors provides housing market statistics at various geographic levels. Data requests can be emailed to Hancen Sale, KAAR’s Government Affairs and Policy Director, at hancen@kaarmls.com and must include your organizational affiliation along with a detailed description of your request.

What are the requirements for primary membership in the MLS and IDX?

The East Tennessee Realtors follows the NARs model for Realtor association owned MLSs: NAR Qualification for MLS Participation and IDX:

  • Participants must be REALTORS® who are a principal, partner, corporate officer, or branch office manager acting on behalf of a principal.
  • Participants must hold a current, valid real estate broker’s license.
  • Participants must offer or accept compensation to and from other participants (or be licensed or certified by a state regulatory agency to engage in the appraisal of real property).
  • Participants (other than appraisers) must actively—continually and on an ongoing basis—endeavor to: a. list real property of the type listed on the MLS in which participation is sought and/or, b. accept offers of cooperation and compensation made by listing brokers in the MLS.

The United States Office of Management and Budget designated Knoxville as the Knoxville, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Knoxville population is around 698,030, making it the 73rd largest MSA in the United States. It is the third largest and second most populous city in the US state of Tennessee. Residents of Knoxville proudly bleed orange, as the University of Tennessee draws a lot of football fanatics to the city. Between that and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, sports are a huge part of Knoxville’s culture. While Knoxville’s economy was once primarily fueled by the manufacturing sector, the major industries of the city have varied overtime. Some of the major corporations that add to Knoxville’s economy include The Tennessee Valley Authority, Pilot Flying J, The H.T. Hackney Company, Tombras Group, and Discovery Inc.

Knoxville’s climate is temperate with mild winters and warm summers. The highest temperature in the summer rises to around 70°F, and the lowest temperature in the winter falls to around 50°F. Knoxville sees an average of 50 inches of rainfall and 6 inches of snowfall per year. The nicest time of the year is from April to October.
